Our Dining Experience

My wife and I recently became parents, so it’s tough to find time to get away with just the two of us. This past weekend, we were able to find ourselves a babysitter and head on out to Marshall to enjoy a date night at a place that we have had our eyes on for some time now. When we arrived, we were greeted by Julie, the General Manager and she immediately assisted us and helped us to our table. We were lucky enough to find our seats in front of the open layout kitchen, and had the privilege of watching the chefs prepare dinner for everyone.

Field and Main – Open Kitchen with Hearth

The room was very warm, welcoming, and had a very inviting feel to it. Our waiter quickly met us at our table, and we took a look at their a la carte menu. Field and Main also had a secondary menu for a multi-course meal if selected by the entire table. While we did not choose that menu, we did see plenty of it being prepared and it also looked amazing!

What was on the Menu?

To start us off, we decided on a few appetizers that truly blew our mind. Field and Main, using local produce, creates simplistic, yet refined dishes that offer a unique perspective on food as a whole. I’ll let these pictures speak for themselves, but just know that all of the food we ate was packed with flavor that had us saying “wow.” after every bite.

The two dishes that we chose were:

Heirloom Tomato and Peach Salad with Whipped Fresh Cheese, Basil-Peach Vinaigrette & Basil Seed Caviar

Field and Main – Heirloom Tomato and Peach

Compressed Watermelon Salad with Feta, Cherry Tomatoes, Ground Cherries & Turmeric Vinaigrette

Field and Main – Compressed Watermelon Salad

Of course we also enjoyed a few drinks with this fantastic adventure, but I’ll save that for another time. After we licked these two plates clean, we moved on to our entrees which again, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Diver Scallops with Blistered Tomato, Squash, Ground Cherry, Tomato Consume & Pimenton Oil

Field and Main – Diver Scallops

Sirloin Steak with Blistered Green Beans, Tarragon, Crispy Shallots & Bearnaise Sauce

Field and Main – Sirloin Steak

Last but not least, my wife and I both decided on the same dessert. Being that we were seated directly in front of the cook who was preparing them, it was hard to say no. This dish could probably be shared, but we both decided on our own as it was that good.

After Dinner Thoughts

After enjoying such a delicious dinner, it’s hard not to talk about it. Our overall experience was great from the time we walked in the door, quite literally until we walked out. This is definitely a place we will be back to; Hopefully with friends and family. I would have to place Field and Main within our top 2-3 restaurants that we have enjoyed here in Northern Virginia. If we aren’t able to get a seat close to the kitchen next visit, Field and Main also has private cabanas that are reservable for your dinner, and we will most likely give one of those a shot. If you check it out, let them know we sent you, and please let us know how it goes!!
